Meet freelance product designer Neil Foley whose forte includes startling contours in varying products like automobiles, kitchen appliances and fashion accessories.
1-How would you describe your experience in London?
Enriching and inspiring. Meeting leading industrial designers in the UK and studying their growth over the years was an excellent learning experience. The fact that many UK desi gn firms took keen interest in my work and were enthusiastic about collaborating with me, was heartening. I am also in the process of working with a few design stores in London and the Philippines for retailing some of my life style products.
2. Can you tell us what kind of designs formed part of your presentation?
Products ranging from kitchen appliances, sewing machines, life style home products, fashion accessories, watches, bicycles and concept products for cities and urban design. I also showcased some creations that have won me National and International design awards. 3. In your mind, what aspect of your creations lends them the winning edge?
While conceptualizing products, right from the initial paper scribble to the high-end computer generated image, and then to the final product, I always try to push the envelope and develop something that creates a “wow” feel. I believe as a designer if one is able to evoke that feeling of awe and surprise for the user or onlooker, the design has performed 80% of its task, keeping usability as a hygiene factor. My products create an emotional and cognitive dialogue between the user and the product. But what I think creates the winning edge is how I integrate art, usability and manufacturability together.
