"The majority of the the cases that come to me involve an extra marital angle," says Pandit. Her tactics vary as per the situation. In a recent happening, Pandit detangled an issue when a mother kidnapped her own five-year-old, fearing that he would spill the beans regarding her sordid affair with another man, while her husband was out of town. "When the father returned from the US, the mother sobbed and told him that he had disappeared on his way back from a birthday party.

We clocked her movements, tapped phones and narrowed down to her friend who had begun staying at the family home on the outskirts of Mumbai." In another development, years ago, Pandit had even masqueraded as a domestic servant for a period of six months in a woman's house to nab her lover, who was wanted by the police. "I dropped a knife on my foot 'accidentally' in the kitchen when he appeared after his call two months prior. And on the pretext to going to the doctor, came down and called up the police from the PCO. Of course, there were no cellphones those days."

Her 15 years in the profession have lead to her handling close to 10,000 cases. And she has observed an increase in the number of women taking to this work, with time. "Women do make better detectives than men. They can sniff something amiss from a distance, come across as unsuspicious and can easily draw people into conversation.

These are golden attributes in our field of work. Also the popular perception is 'What can a woman do?', this makes it easier for women to procure information unsuspectingly," says Pandit. Recipient of 21 awards, the lady has also authored two books: Chehra Adche Chehra (Face behind Face) and Mayajaal, elaborating upon the baffling modus operandi employed in the cases she has solved.
