Meet Anil Thakraney -- the motor-mouthed, typewriter guerilla; much hated columnist and zealous adman who packs in more punch than you can grapple with.
Born in Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh. Brought up in Jaipur.
Lived in Mumbai since 10 years of age (except for a few years in the 90s in Bangalore).
After an MBA, joined O&M as an Account Executive. Bored of sitting in client meets all day, switched to the creative department after a few years.
Rose to be a creative director at J.Walter Thompson
In 1997, joined the Mid Day Group. Launched India’s defining advertising and media magazine, The Brief: Nurtured it as Editor for over six years. The Brief: folded.
In 2003, accepted an offer by Lowe to help turn around their struggling New Delhi office. Task accomplished. Moved on at the end of the contract period.
Weekly column in Sunday Mid Day more than five years old.
Was conferred title Media Columnist of the Year 2002 and the Rotary Club of Sealand Award in 2003 for exemplary contribution to the field of journalism.
He’s a human X-ray machine. I concluded that after I met him for the first time in 2000. He was then Editor, The Brief: and dubbed neurotic by many for his irreverent takes at all, within and beyond the media environs. Cut to 2005, Anil Thakraney is hardly cooling his heels post his second sojourn into the ad world.
