Page 1 of 4 Pack to thrill. That’s the motto of The Packaging Company. Shilpi
Madan meets Poonam Bhambhani and partner Anjali Kedia , to unwrap the
creative souls behind the enterprise.
“How dull it is to pause, to make an end, to rust unburnished
Not to shine in use
As tho’ to breathe were life…”
-- Alfred Lord Tennyson (in “Ulysses”)
It’s a sweltering afternoon in Mumbai’s clammy climes. Yet the air is
crackling with activity in the little studio. Chocolate drops midst
tassles and wispy lace in quaint, wooden carts ensconce to announce the
arrival of a new born, star spangled Barbies hold the invites for a kid’s
third birthday, expensive sarees sheathed in a riot of colour masquerade
as Holi gifts, embossed impressions of the tuskered god Ganapati smile
benignly on richly textured boxes…And the duo moves around busily, deftly
creating magical wrapping for each keepsake. For Poonam Bhambhani and
Anjali Kedia of The Packaging Company, giving joy through their expertise
matters the most.
“A thing of beauty is a joy forever,” said John Keats. And they understood
that when they held their first exhibition five years ago. “ We showcased
ornate trays, elaborate thaals, delicate baskets and other knick knacks
that could be assembled to make impressive packaging material,” says
Poonam. The display was held before Diwali and invited an overwhelming
response. “The number of orders we got was staggering. So much so that we
ended up floating our own company, and registering for a PAN number
because the corporate orders began pouring in,” she gushes. Today the
Company has on its payroll a team of craftsmen toiling away in a huge
factory at Kalyan.
